Post OfficeNetroots Wisconsin 2010By borges, Section Post Office
Netroots Wisconsin 2010 is the first regional conference of Netroots
Nation to be held in Wisconsin (and the second in the nation). Netroots
Wisconsin will be the meeting place for bloggers, netroots activists,
journalists, progressive politicians, and others using the Internet to
improve life in our state.
We are now welcoming people to register, suggest sessions, and give us any ideas you may have for making Netroots Wisconsin a success in its first year. Unite the Cheddarsphere! http://netrootswisconsin.org Annual Happy Mother's Day/KickTime Birthday PostBy borges, Section Post Office
Another year has run around and KickTime is celebrating five years of publishing events of the Kickapoo Valley--lifting up the good of the Valley. This effort was launched on Mother's Day in 2005 with the hope that people would join-in by posting material and points of view from this unique place. That participation has always been fitful, sometimes on and other times off. Presently, even my interest is at a low point. Without a groundswell (well some anyway) of participation, the future of KickTime is uncertain.
It might be that automation of posting, like offering an email posting option, could streamline the maintenance of the site and decentralize control. This would require an investment ($$) to convert to a platform more able to accommodate this kind of participation. Raising that money is another time-consuming project that this admin is not finding an exciting prospect. So it is time to speak up if you have interest in taking the keys, or kicking in some effort or money to sustain this site, or transforming this to some next thing. If you have ideas contact me at admins@kicktime.org I hope KickTime is here next year to celebrate a sixth year, but it has been fun and productive these past five years and that might be enough. It is good to know when to say enough is enough. Oh and call your mom today... --borges Google Wave of the futureBy borges, Section Post Office
"We can handle pretty much any amount of applause..." says Lars Rasmussen, Software Engineering Manager on Google Wave. And there is a lot of applause happening with this new tool-- Google's answer to replace email. Given that email is an antiquated, inefficient, ugly way to communicate, we have to be on tip toes to see how this will work and hope it takes off. Best of all it is open source too.
The video below is an early preview that seems to show an application that mirrors email enough to keep people comfortable, but pushes the functions out that might help people move on to a new communication model. What is also nice is the seamless interface with blogs...try a community blog that posts reasonable stories with something like email. Group collaboration on documents, meeting notes are also seamless. Playback makes it transparent what changes, conversations have happened...have a look. Social Media and the futureBy borges, Section Post Office
For those out there unsure of the possibilities of social media in the "real" world, here is a video that lays out the power and possibility of this new direction. The link is here if you can't see the embed.
Us Now from Banyak Films on Vimeo. Wolfram Alpha Search launches 5/15By borges, Section Post Office
A new approach to searching the web is launching this evening at 7pm. It will be a more intelligent search than Google, although I have always maintained Google was mostly good for online shopping queries.
To see a preview of what Wolfram Alpha can do click on this Link and watch the video presentation of its capabilities. It is an amazing demonstration. There has been much hype, and tonight's launch will no doubt be more than some will want to witness, but it seems likely that this will change the types of questions and relevance of answers we all expect from the web. Below is a video of the founders talking about the launch.
One question emerges as they discuss the scope of the work...who is paying for all this and how can it be sustained? (3 comments) Comments >> Another Computer Help Evening at the Viroqua LibraryBy borges, Section Post Office
If you have computer questions and need help to get over the confusion, come to the McIntosh Memorial Library in Viroqua Monday evenings in May for an informal consult. A person (me to start this off) will be upstairs near the computer workstations to puzzle over problems from 7 pm to closing at 8pm every Monday in May (the 25th is Memorial Day/library closed.) If your Christmas pictures are still in the camera, if using a browser or word processor is giving you fits, feel free to tap local computer helpers next month.
For those people reading this who are comfortable with computer issues, you are invited to pitch in. Drop me an email at admins[at]kicktime.org and we can work out the details. If this proves popular, it may continue through the summer and hopefully build support from those familiar with common computer issues and fixes.

Plan for Community Computer HelpBy borges, Section Post Office
There was a good response to the offer of help on common computer problems/questions. So this will start in May. The night of the week is not determined yet, but the Viroqua Library has agreed to be the site. I will work out with the staff there what would be the most convenient.
The library was chosen because a few people requested it be at the technical college, but I did not realize that they do not have open WiFi. So the library was chosen as a public institution that has open access to wireless. They also have some computers that may be useful in addition to our personal laptops. If there is a better day of the week from your perspective email me at admins[at]kicktime.org with the suggestion. If you have an interest in volunteering to help people, drop an email too.
