POWAQQATSI—LIFE IN TRANSITION to be shown at
McIntosh Memorial Library July 7
Viroqua’s Library kicks off their free Documentary Series with help from VSN on July 7, 2010. The film “POWAQQATSI” by the award winning filmmaker Godfrey Reggio, featuring music by the renowned composer Philip Glass, will be shown on Wednesday at 5:00PM, runs 99 minutes. A group discussion period will follow. Reggio’s films are in a style of his own invention. The title “POWAQQATSI” is a Hopi Indian phrase. “Powaqa” refers to a negative sorcerer who lives at the expense of others, “Qatsi” means life. It is a visually powerful film, second in the “Qatsi” trilogy. However, Powaqqatsi, says Reggio, is not a film about what should or shouldn’t be-- “It’s an impression, an examination of how life is changing.” It has been described as a celebration of the human-scale endeavor, the craftsmanship, spiritual worship, labor and creativity that define a particular culture. The primary focus is on natives of the Third World regions of Asia, India, Africa the Middle East and South America and how they express their cultures and respond to the lure of mechanization and technology in mega-cities. Trina Erickson, McIntosh Library Director, advises that the viewing space is limited, a maximum of 20 people, so come early if you can and see where the discussion takes us.

Earth Day at Grove Library 4/22By borges, Section Library
The Soldiers Grove Library Celebrates Earth Day
with a very unique travelogue Noel Kegel will share slides and stories from his transcontinental bicycle trip on Thursday, April 22nd at 7pm in the Community room. Kegel has always loved bicycling. Growing up in the family's bike shop, over the years cycling became an integral part of Noel's identity. And in time, his idea for the ultimate bike trip started brewing: to travel from one ocean to the other, across Europe and Asia, by bicycle! Finally, in January of 2009, Noel actually began his astounding, 11,000 mile overland trek between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Taking off from Lisbon, Portugal with his bike and camping gear, he crossed the 'Old Worlds' through Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and then following the Silk Road across Central Asia to China, Noel reached Shanghai, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, in time to be back home for Christmas. The journey had taken him one year. Come & enjoy the adventures of this intrepid biker! You might be inspired to take your own bike for a ride---it's Spring, after all. This program is free of charge and everyone is welcome. Bicycle Day at Grove Library 4/10By borges, Section Library
