Dear Wisconsin Colleagues, You can bring a new community, full-power radio station to your town, but you must act now. I am contacting you to ask that you join other Wisconsin organizations and the Radio for People Coalition in our efforts to expand Wisconsin community-based radio. This is an urgent call for communities across the state to organize and acquire wonderful and powerful media resources. Sometime in 2007, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will open a five-day window for organizations to apply for new, FULL POWER (not low power) non-commercial educational (NCE) radio frequencies.
Full power station licensing has been frozen for almost 20 years. So, this is a brief and rare opportunity for your community to acquire a powerful media resource, one that is not likely to come again in the foreseeable future. The channels allocated in this window are designated as non-commercial educational stations. You cannot apply as an individual. The applicant must be an organization with an educational mission; however, you do not need 501(c)3 (tax exempt) status to qualify. Radio for People is a national coalition of grassroots independent media groups, lawyers, radio engineers, radio stations, free media advocates, professional associations, social justice activists, and many other concerned individuals. We have joined together for the single purpose of helping you. If you want to build a radio station to give voice to issues, promote public discourse, and enrich community life, we will help you, every step of the way. Currently, Radio for People is reaching out to organizations throughout the Midwest, helping to establish statewide coalitions. We have set up weekly conference calls for individual states. Our next Wisconsin call will be Tuesday, March 6, at noon CT. We hope that you will be able to join us on that call.
